Nest Insulation in the European Robin (Erithacus Rubecula): Effects of Latitude and Construction Materials

2016

The various roles that birds’ nests play are widely discussed and there is increasing interest in developing a better understanding of how they achieve these roles. The insulatory properties of nests have been investigated in a variety of songbird species and can vary with temperature and latitude. However, data are only available for a limited number of species. Here, we study the variations of the insulatory properties of European Robin ( Erithacus rubecula) nests in conjunction with the morphology of the nests and composition of the materials used in construction. As well as quantifying the materials used to construct these nests for the first time, we test the hypothesis that there is …

Anatomy and physiology of cisternostomy

2016

Cisternostomy is defined as opening the basal cisterns to atmospheric pressure. This technique helps to reduce the intracranial pressure in severe head trauma as well as other conditions when the so-called sudden “brain swelling” troubles the surgeon. We elaborated the surgical anatomy of this procedure as well as the proposed physiology of how cisternostomy works. This novel technique may change the current trends in neurosurgery.

Variable pulmonary manifestations in Chitayat syndrome: Six additional affected individuals

2020

Hand hyperphalangism leading to shortened index fingers with ulnar deviation, hallux valgus, mild facial dysmorphism and respiratory compromise requiring assisted ventilation are the key features of Chitayat syndrome. This condition results from the recurrent heterozygous missense variant NM_006494.2:c.266A>G; p.(Tyr89Cys) in ERF on chromosome 19q13.2, encoding the ETS2 repressor factor (ERF) protein. The pathomechanism of Chitayat syndrome is unknown. To date, seven individuals with Chitayat syndrome and the recurrent pathogenic ERF variant have been reported in the literature. Here, we describe six additional individuals, among them only one presenting with a history of assisted ventil…

Quantitative Phase Analysis of Mixtures of Three Components using Rietveld and Rius Standardless Methods. Comparative Results

2000

Eight samples, supplied by the Commission on Powder Diffraction of the International Union of Crystallography, through the Round Robin on quantitative phase analysis, were analized using standardless methods. Samples were mixtures of corundum, zincite and fluorite in different ratios. The Rietveld method, using the DBW 3.2 and FULLPROF software, and the Rius method, using MENGE-PC software, were used. Results obtained agree well with the real composition supplied (a posteriori) by the IUCr.

A two-phase problem with Robin conditions on the free boundary

2020

We study for the first time a two-phase free boundary problem in which the solution satisfies a Robin boundary condition. We consider the case in which the solution is continuous across the free boundary and we prove an existence and a regularity result for minimizers of the associated variational problem. Finally, in the appendix, we give an example of a class of Steiner symmetric minimizers. peerReviewed

Il gesto comparativo negli studi urbani critici

2021

Not all cities are the same, but the processes that occur within them can be assimilated and analyzed thanks to more or less universal mo…

Recommendation of RILEM TC237-SIB on cohesion test of recycled asphalt

2018

This recommendation describes how to evaluate the presence of potentially active bitumen in recycled asphalt (RA) materials through the cohesion test. The experimental protocol is designed according to the research performed by the RILEM Technical Committee 237-SIB ‘‘Testing and characterization of sustainable innovative bituminous materials and systems’’ with the purpose, to develop a new, simple and fast method for the characterization of RA while limiting the need for conventional rheological tests. The guidelines in this recommendation focus on the testing procedure including specimen preparation, data analysis and provide information on the preparation of a tests report.

A case of femoral-facial syndrome in a patient with autism spectrum disorders.

2011

The Femoral hypoplasia - unusual facies syndrome (FHUF) or Femoral - facial syndrome (FFS) was at first described in 1975. Up to now about 60 cases have been reported. According to our knowledge only 4 cases have had congenital central nervous system's malformations, furthermore the main stages of psychomotor development are almost always reported as normal or slightly altered in early childhood. We describe the first case of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in a patient with FFS, emphasizing that this rare association could be one of many unrecognized underlying features.

Modeling Round Robin Test: An Uncoupled Approach

2014

Abstract The solution of the modeling test presented in the paper is based on an uncoupled hydro-mechanical approach. Firstly, the controlled infiltration process is modeled by a finite element transient groundwater seepage software. Afterwards, calculated pore water pressures at successive instants are used for the slope stability analysis. Time evolution of the slope stability is analysed by using the infinite slope model, according to the classical limit equilibrium method.

Recommendation of RILEM TC237-SIB: protocol for characterization of recycled asphalt (RA) materials for pavement applications

2018

This recommendation proposes an experimental protocol to characterize Recycled Asphalt (RA) materials. The guidelines presented in this document are based on the results of a Round Robin Test (RRT) organized by the RILEM Technical Committee 237-SIB “Testing and characterization of sustainable innovative bituminous materials and systems” and provide information on the testing procedure, data analysis and indications for the preparation of a test report.
